Description: In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system.
This oral history of Norm Bernard, who at the time of the interview was a Maintenance Supervisor II for Caltrans. In the interview he shares his experiences of how the Loma Prieta earthquake affected his neighborhood in Foster City, CA and then working with the Bridge crews at Caltrans to inspect structures for earthquake damage. Bernard also worked other natural disasters, the Christmas Floods of 1964 and the February Floods of 1984. He retired from Caltrans eleven days after this interview, after working for twenty-seven years.
